With melodic courage and razor sharp timing, the art rock role of “lead bass” is adeptly handled for Divine In Sight by Jonathan Dexter, whose signature Rickenbacker 4003S/5 sound is the prominent instrumental force to the band’s musical style. Strung with a high C instead of the conventional low B in order to facilitate higher register lead lines, Dexter’s bass guitar approach is a modern interpretation of progressive rock’s quintessential component, combining the precision of Chris Squire and Michael Rutherford with the power rock drive of Geddy Lee. Not only a virtuoso player, Dexter co-wrote and co-arranged much of Sorrow & Promise and juggles keyboard and bass pedal duties during the band’s live performance. “I am quite happy with my primary role in this band” quips Dexter with a wry smile, “namely that of keeping Bart humble.”
